What to do about the USMNT?

There is something seriously wrong with our national team, and it is apparent to almost everyone who has been following the team. Bob Bradley's boys are playing uninspired soccer , squandering chances left and right, and look lost about what their identity is. Last night's game against Guadeloupe (Highlights here) ended 1-0 in favor of the USA, but they failed to finish 10 chances inside of 12 yards, the worst of course being Dempsey's (hereafter referred to as "Deuce") lackadaisical effort from 2 yards out *quadruple facepalm* (it was so bad that I double facepalmed and then, to my surprise, I found my wife had double facepalmed over my facepalm, leading to the first ever quadruple facepalm known to man (not actually a true statement, the quadruple facepalm was already in existence as evidenced by the photo below)).

The Deuce alone had 4 of those misses, including two headers, the aforementioned sitter, and his last whirling dervish effort that went wide of the post with Bedoya screaming from the top of the six yard box to pass the ball. Wondo missed two, a 1-on-1 with Gandel off a nifty pass from Altidore where he may or may not have been offsides, and a left footed shot from about 7 yards out under pressure but he should have put away. Altidore had one also that he should have put away, though he fought off two defenders to create the chance, and scored our only goal so you can't be too critical. His laser in the 9' was a moment of brilliance that reminds us of his almost limitless potential, if he just wouldn't disappear completely for large stretches of a game at a time. Donovan did a Wondo-from-the-Panama-game impression and sent the ball over the goal from the top of the six. The last two went to Bedoya, but to be fair, the level of difficulty for him was way higher than any of the ones above. I can forgive because his first chance was off a long cross that was deflected before it got to him and his first touch failed him and was a little too close to Gandel, and his second was a header where he had to leap over a Gwada boy just to get to it. The amount of chances that we threw away was absolutely shocking, actual picture of Sam's Army here:

We put away half those chances and it's a 6-0 USA victory and all the naysayers disappear. But we didn't, and here we are, and you can count me among the naysayers. I have never been a fan of Bob Bradley's team selections and especially his tactics. US soccer needs a facelift and a new identity. We have to hold on to the work ethic and grit that has been a hallmark of our national team (until recently that is), but add a creative dynamic that is lacking. I know the arguments, I know we don't have a classic #10, that we lack a playmaker and Bob is doing the best he can with what he has, that Davies' and Holden's injuries have robbed us of two of our more dynamic players. Even if they were healthy, BB would trot out two defensive mids and keep our two most dynamic attackers in LD and Deuce on the wings where their skills aren't fully utilized. Landon has been on an absolute tear in MLS, he got to the national team and has had 3 straight sub-par games. Deuce was named Fulham's player of the year and led his team in scoring, and he has given his all in the US kit as well, but he looks frustrated, and not just with his own finishing. The team doesn't buy what Bob is selling, and it shows on the field. Do I have all the answers? Maybe (just kidding, of course I don't), but this is an issue that the DSF will be looking into much closer in the coming days...

  1. Watching that game, I began to get a creeping, bad feeling inside that Guadeloupe was going to luck in a goal somehow, even if by proxy, and make the last few minutes of that game a frenzy. The only thing that kept me sober was the fact that a tie still put us through to the knockout stage. But wouldn't it have been sick to watch us dominate that game the way we did, missing chance after chance, and only come out with a point? If I was Sunil Gulati, and that had happened, I would have fired Bob Bradley on the spot.

    And I like the guy.

  2. I think this team will have a difficult time unless Reggae Boyz decide to play a more conservative role- If they go attacking like their previous 3 games, I think the US loses. Also, everyone see's the lack of identity/system. Each player and their respected club team identity come home to confusion. Maybe its the lack of time together- but the coach has been unable to maximize players potential- providing direction- you can see it on the pitch. To me, Edu needs to play over Bradley. Bradley is almost all of the time out of position- especially on offense- He leaves the backline in jeopardy at times. I think his lack of playing time at Villa is showing him unfit as well. He doesn’t deserve the start over someone with Champion League Experience!
